Bonanno Catheter – why surgeons are now considering an alternative technique

The Bonanno Catheter

The Bonanno catheter was originally designed for suprapubic cystostomy by Dr. J. P. Bonanno in 1970. The procedure involves creating a direct, temporary opening into the bladder through the skin just above the pubic bone, allowing for efficient bladder drainage when the normal urinary route is compromised. It has been available on the market for many years. However, clinicians may be looking for an alternative product for patients requiring long-term bladder drainage. That’s where our S-Cath™ System comes into its own.

Mediplus S-Cath™ System

The S-Cath™ System features a patented design that employs the Seldinger technique to deliver a comprehensive, user-friendly solution to enhance the safety of suprapubic catheterisation. This system reduces the need for general anaesthetic, making the procedure safer and more accessible. The use of a 3-stage guidewire ensures accurate catheter placement, significantly reducing the risks associated with blind insertion. Supplied as a sterile, complete kit – including a needle, guidewire, sheath dilator, silicone Foley catheter, scalpel, and syringes—the system supports both inpatient and outpatient use across adult and children’s populations. As healthcare providers work to reduce complications and improve efficiency, advanced devices like the S-Cath™ System offer a precise, low-risk, minimally invasive SPC solution that elevates patient care.

Gold standard in the UK

Trusted for more than 15 years in the UK, Europe, Australia, and Canada

“The kit itself is robust and of good quality, and I would strongly recommend its use in all urology, gynaecology, A&E, as well as in all theatre suites.”
